Guide to the farmcoast
We've put together a handy map of the area, including everything below and a little bit more...
EAT + DRINK
Little Compton
- ☕🥐 ART CAFE 7 S of Commons Rd, Little Compton | Where you'll want to head for your morning coffee (CASH ONLY - there's an ATM across the street next to Wilbur's General Store). Linger a little while at the tables on the lawn or have a wander through the church cemetery.
- 🍕A-1 PIZZA 20 Commons, Little Compton | The best around (CASH ONLY - there's an ATM up the street next to Wilbur's General Store). Be good to Bill and Tina behind the counter, they're local treasures ! Clay approves, even though it's not a 'sauce-led New Haven-style apizza'... 🙄
- 🍑🌽WALKER'S ROADSIDE STAND / YOUNG FAMILY FARM 260-261 West Main Rd, Little Compton | Great farm stands just up the way from the Hudners' house. Load up on local produce (tomatoes! corn! apples!) in the morning on your way out of town. Walker's has Wilma's bakery (sandwiches, dips, pastries, pies), while Young's has homemade pizzas — can't go wrong.
- 🍑🌽WISHING STONE FARM 25 Shaw Rd, Little Compton | Another excellent farm stand, in the southeastern part of town. They also offer baked goods, and make a mean gazpacho.
- 📰🥚🍞WILBUR'S GENERAL STORE 50 Commons, Little Compton | Local store for various and sundry. This is where Daisy + Tango (the Hudner dogs) get their corn muffins every Saturday.
- 🍳🥓 THE BARN 13 Main St., Adamsville | Sweet little breakfast-only spot (open until 1pm) in the hamlet of Adamsville. Take a moment to appreciate that Little Compton is the only town in America with a monument to a chicken — the stately Rhode Island Red was bred here, and across the street by the little league field there's a charming granite and bronze plaque celebrating that fact.
- 🍳🥓 THE COMMON'S LUNCH 48 Commons, Little Compton | The local greasy spoon, 'where the elite meet' (CASH ONLY - there's an ATM right next door). Try the johnnycakes and a cup of chowder, or go for an egg sandwich.
- 🍻🥩🥔 CROWTHER'S RESTAURANT 90 Pottersville Rd, Little Compton | Little Compton's go-to tavern, affectionately known as 'The Crow'. The use case here would be a Friday night pint — and possibly some chowder, oysters, or Cheez-Its — on either side of the Welcome Party.
TIVERTON
- ☕COASTAL ROASTERS 1791 Main Rd, Tiverton | Lovely little coffee roastery and cafe. Speed is not their strong suit, but they brew a fine cup.
- 🍤EVELYN'S DRIVE-IN 2335 Main Rd, Tiverton | Classic New England seafood joint. Order ahead or brave the line and sit outside on a crushed shell patio overlooking Nanaquaket pond. Be aware that some of the best things are fried — you'll want to pace yourself.
- 🧀🥖 MILK & HONEY 3838 Main Road, Tiverton | Cheese and picnic supplies at Four Corners.
- 🍦GRAY'S ICE CREAM 16 East Rd., Tiverton | Famous shop at Four Corners. Try the mint chip, oreo, ginger, black raspberry chip, or anything coffee. Word to the wise: a 'small' is LARGE.
- 🥪 🍪PROVENDER 3883 Main Rd, Tiverton | Good sandwiches, penny candy, and cookies.
WESTPORT
- 🍤THE BAYSIDE RESTAURANT 1253 Horseneck Rd, Westport MA | There's often a crowd, but the lobster rolls are a TREAT (obviously order butter, not mayo; consider the sweet potato fries). Grab a drink or go for a walk through the Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary while you wait. NB: Bay wrote her college application essay about this place and Clay brought her a strawberry rhubarb proposal pie from here; it's important.
- 🍻 BUZZARD'S BAY BREWERY 98 Horseneck Rd, Westport MA | Fun local brewery often hosting small acoustic gigs, a food truck, or local oyster companies. Great for a one-two punch with The Bayside.
SEE + DO
get outside
Look for the green icons on our map, grab some friends, and go for a swim, walk, or kayak (reservations recommended) !
Beach: Tappen's/Warren's (a bluff jump is a must) and Lloyd's are favorites
Nature preserve: try the Dundery Brook Trail through the John C. Whitehead Preserve, or duck into Wilbour Woods.
golf, TENNIS, PAddle Tennis
Sakonnet Golf Club does not have tee times, so please give the pro shop a call or just show up if you want to play golf. Saturday is fully booked with a tournament, but Friday is wide open ! Usual dress applies; no spikes.
Sakonnet Golf Pro Shop: 401 635 4706
Green fee: $120 ($75 if joined by a member — let us know if you want to play and hopefully we can add a local friend to your group!)
For tennis, just show up! Please wear whites and sweep the clay courts after you are done playing. If anyone asks, say you are a guest of the Hudners and that we cleared it with the pro shop.
Paddle Tennis is not actually at the club, but up the street off a little driveway entered by 661 West Main Road.
NEWPORT MANSIONS Bellevue Ave, Newport | Several of these over-the-top Gilded Age summer 'cottages' are open to the public. The Breakers is the grande dame, while Marble House (check out the Chinese Tea House), Rosecliff (The Great Gatsby was shot here in 1974), and The Elms don't fall far behind.
CLIFF WALK Eustis Ave & Memorial Blvd, Newport | Walk along the Newport coastline and view the mansions from the water. The full trail is 3.5 miles, but it's also possible to just cover a segment.
RISD MUSEUM 20 North Main St, Providence | The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) puts on fantastic exhibitions and also has an excellent permanent collection.
NEW BEDFORD WHALING MUSEUM 18 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford MA | New Bedford was once the whaling capital of the world, and the museum captures some incredible stories from that time. Moby-Dick fans should pop in at the Seamen's Bethel across the street:
'In this same New Bedford there stands a Whaleman's Chapel, and few are the moody fishermen, shortly bound for the Indian Ocean or Pacific, who fail to make a Sunday visit to the spot.'
LITTLE COMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY 548 West Main Rd, Little Compton | Get your fill of local lore at Wilbor House (built in 1690) and check out the special exhibition in the barn.
